1. About NIOS Board

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was established in 1989 to provide flexible learning opportunities to students who cannot attend regular schooling.

NIOS conducts public examinations twice a year (April-May & October-November). The certificate awarded by NIOS is equivalent to CBSE, CISCE, and other state boards, making it valid for government jobs, higher education, and competitive exams like JEE, NEET, etc.

2. NIOS Admission Streams

NIOS offers online admission categorized into different streams based on candidate requirements:

  • Stream 1 (Block-1 & Block-2): For fresh learners seeking admission to Class 10th or 12th. Block-1 exams are held in April/May, and Block-2 exams are held in October/November.
  • Stream 2: For candidates who have failed in regular school boards but want to save their academic year by appearing in October/November public exams.
  • Stream 3: For Class 10th failed/backlog students who want to appear in On-Demand Examinations (ODE).
  • Stream 4: For Class 12th failed/backlog students who want to appear in On-Demand Examinations (ODE).

4. Registration & Admission Fees

Note: Registration fee includes the cost of syllabus, educational study materials, and identity cards. Additional exam fees apply at the time of examination registration.

5. Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for NIOS admissions online, candidates must check their age and academic eligibility parameters:

  • Class 10th (Secondary) Admission:
    • The candidate must have completed 14 years of age as of 31st July for Block-1 or 31st January for Block-2.
    • The candidate must possess a Class 8th school leaving certificate or a self-declaration certifying basic literacy.
  • Class 12th (Senior Secondary) Admission:
    • The candidate must have completed 15 years of age as of 31st July for Block-1 or 31st January for Block-2.
    • The candidate must have passed the Class 10th (Secondary) examination from any recognized board in India.

6. List of Required Documents (Scanned Copies)

Candidates need to upload high-quality scanned copies of the following documents during the online application process:

  • Identity Proof: Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID Card, or Ration Card.
  • Recent Passport Photograph: Color photo with clear background.
  • Signature: Scanned signature in black ink on white paper.
  • Birth Certificate: Birth certificate issued by Municipal Authority or School Leaving Certificate.
  • Previous Qualification Certificate: Class 8th Certificate (for 10th admission) or Class 10th Board marksheet (for 12th admission).
  • Address Proof: Utility bill, Rent agreement, or Aadhaar Card.
  • Category Certificate: SC/ST/OBC certificate (if applicable for fee concession).

7. How to Apply Online for NIOS Admission 2026

Follow these simple steps to fill out your NIOS online registration form:

  1. Visit the official portal of NIOS Student Information Section (sdmis.nios.ac.in).
  2. Click on the "Admission" tab on the homepage and select the desired course stream.
  3. Select your state, identity type, and enter your basic details to generate an OTP.
  4. Fill in your personal, contact, and academic details in the respective form sections.
  5. Select your study center preference (AI - Accredited Institution) close to your residence.
  6. Upload all required scanned documents (Photo, Signature, Marksheet, and ID card) in the prescribed format.
  7. Review the filled-in application details carefully to ensure zero errors.
  8. Proceed to the online payment portal and pay the admission fee using Net Banking, Credit Card, Debit Card, or UPI.
  9. Print out the generated application form and fee payment receipt for future reference.
